Two-Spirit

June is both National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month, a vital time to honour and uplift the voices of Two-Spirit (2S) people. Many individuals are unaware of the term Two-Spirit, where the term originated, and the power it carries.

πŸ’¬ The term β€œTwo-Spirit” was shared in 1990 by Elder Myra Laramee. It reflects the deep cultural and spiritual identities of Indigenous people who embody both masculine and feminine spirits. Supporting Two-Spirit folks means standing with 2S-led healing and education efforts. It is important to remember that these notions, ideas and identities should not be generalized to all Indigenous peoples and cultures.

Alberta PCNs are committed to fostering safe and inclusive environments that deeply value diversity, while respecting and acknowledging the contributions of every individual, this includes patients, families, health care providers, physicians and volunteers. We support all health journeys. No matter who you are, or where you are on your self-identification journey, you can always book an appointment with your family doctor β€” or a doctor you feel comfortable sharing information with β€” to safely discuss personal health and related goals.
